French President Emmanuel Macron Jogs in Ankara During NATO Summit, Recalling Nairobi Run With Kipchoge

French President Emmanuel Macron went out for his usual morning exercise at Seğmenler Park in Ankara on July 8, 2026, shortly after arriving in the Turkish capital to attend the NATO summit. Accompanied by his bodyguards and French officials, Macron was seen running through the park and near Çankaya, a former presidential residence, waving to media crews and members of the public along the way.

Security was tightened around the park during the exercise, with police securing the surrounding streets and the area temporarily closed to the public while the French leader completed his roughly hour-long run. Turkish authorities had earlier denied reports that certain routes in Ankara would be shut down exclusively for Macron's jogging routine, though the closure still drew criticism from residents and opposition figures who said daily life in the city had been disrupted for visiting leaders during the summit.

Macron later returned to his hotel before joining other NATO leaders for the summit's official proceedings, which focused on defense spending, support for Ukraine and the alliance's defense industry.

Morning runs abroad have become something of a trademark for Macron, who rarely skips the habit even during high-stakes diplomatic travel. He has been spotted jogging on previous visits to China, India, Egypt, Armenia and elsewhere.
A similar scene had earlier played out in Kenya.

On May 11, 2026, while in Nairobi for the Africa Forward Summit co-hosted by France and Kenya, Macron stepped out for an early morning run through the streets of the Kenyan capital, this time joined by marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge. The two-time Olympic champion paced the French president through Nairobi's roads as a group of runners and members of the presidential security detail followed close behind. Residents gathered to watch the pair, and footage of the run quickly went viral online.

Kipchoge later described the outing as an opportunity to discuss support for the next generation of African athletes, while Macron thanked him for his patience, joking that the Kenyan runner had been too fast for him. The run capped a broader itinerary in which Macron engaged with Kenyan culture beyond the summit's formal sessions, before joining President William Ruto for high-level talks on trade, infrastructure, climate and technology cooperation between Africa and Europe.

Taken together, the Ankara and Nairobi runs illustrate a recurring pattern in Macron's foreign travel: a personal fitness routine that has, on more than one occasion, become a talking point of its own, drawing both public curiosity and, as in Ankara, scrutiny over the security and access arrangements it requires.
