The wives of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, have again gone public with complaints about how his case is being handled and his continued detention at the hands of Nigeria's Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, in a dispute that has escalated sharply in recent days following an alleged hospital confrontation and the arrest of his personal physician.
El-Rufai has remained in ICPC custody since February 18, 2026, after responding to an invitation from the anti-graft agency, following a brief earlier period in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. His family has consistently maintained that the detention lacks lawful basis, arguing as early as March that the magistrate's court remand order obtained on February 19 had provided only a fourteen-day window that had long since expired without the ICPC filing formal charges or securing a fresh order.
In a statement at the time signed by his son, Hon. Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, the family described the continued detention as unlawful, brazen self-help and accused the commission of being wielded as a tool for political persecution rather than operating as an impartial institution of justice.
The dispute deepened significantly this week after El-Rufai was taken to the National Hospital in Abuja for a court-approved medical visit. According to the African Democratic Congress, of which El-Rufai is now a prominent member, doctors recommended his admission because of deteriorating health, but ICPC officials rejected that recommendation and insisted on returning him to custody, a decision the party said escalated after his wife and personal physician objected.
The ADC's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the incident in stark terms, stating that President Bola Tinubu was effectively holding a political prisoner in Nigeria, and questioning on whose authority access to family had been denied and why his personal physician had been refused entry despite health concerns.
The ICPC has firmly rejected this account. In a statement from its spokesperson, John Odey, the commission said El-Rufai himself had violated the conditions of the court-approved visit, noting that the Kaduna State High Court had fixed July 6, 7, and 8, 2026 for accelerated hearing of criminal charges against him, but that proceedings could not begin after he allegedly declined to leave custody for court, insisting instead on consulting his personal physician without prior request.
The commission further alleged that photographs surfaced on Facebook showing El-Rufai with his physician, Professor Bello Abubakar, and three other individuals during the hospital visit, posted by a political associate who indicated they had just concluded a meeting, which the ICPC said amounted to a clear violation of the court order and use of the medical visit for purposes outside its intended scope. Professor Abubakar was subsequently arrested for allegedly making false statements.
Speaking directly to journalists outside the family's Abuja residence, El-Rufai's wife, Hajiya Asia, appealed to President Tinubu to ensure her husband receives fair treatment, telling reporters that the family had endured trauma despite having supported the President during the 2023 election campaign. She said the family was not asking Tinubu to interfere with the ongoing trial, only to ensure El-Rufai enjoyed his constitutional rights, and described the toll of the ordeal in personal terms, saying the family lived in constant fear of waking to bad news and characterizing the situation as psychological warfare intended to affect her husband by humiliating and dehumanizing those around him.
She further questioned an order she said had been issued from an unnamed higher authority barring the physician from having any contact for twenty four hours, asking pointedly, who is the above.
This is not the first time El-Rufai's wives have raised such alarms. In May, his second wife, Aisa, addressing journalists outside the headquarters of the Department of State Services during an earlier dispute over which agency had custodial authority over him, said the family was living in fear and under constant pressure from security surveillance, describing tapped phones and daily threats that DSS, ICPC and police officers were coming to raid the family home.
In a separate Hausa-language video interview around the same period, a woman identified as El-Rufai's wife alleged that ICPC officials had denied her entry to deliver food to him and accused the commission of violating a court order granting family members access, claims the ICPC dismissed, insisting he remained in good health with access to medical services in line with approved procedures.
The case sits against a wider legal backdrop that has continued to expand since El-Rufai's initial detention. Charges against him were amended in April to include a count alleging that he intentionally and without authorization intercepted communications belonging to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, an admission prosecutors say he made publicly during a television appearance in February, an offence charged under Nigeria's Cybercrimes Act.
He has also pursued his own legal countermeasures, including a one billion naira fundamental rights enforcement suit against the ICPC following a February raid on his Abuja residence that his lawyer described as unlawful.
For the ADC, the dispute has become a rallying point beyond El-Rufai's personal circumstances, with the party framing the matter as a broader test of constitutional democracy and civil liberties ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections, given El-Rufai's increasingly visible alignment with opposition forces.
For the ICPC, the countervailing narrative has been one of a detainee and his associates exploiting court-ordered accommodations, including medical furlough, for purposes the commission says fall outside what any court sanctioned. Between these two accounts sits a family that says, repeatedly and in increasingly personal terms, that it is exhausted, frightened, and demanding only that due process, as it understands it, be honored.
