The Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Anthony Namoo, has called for an urgent investigation into the alleged killing of more than eight individuals by personnel of the Ghana Police Service's National Operations Unit, popularly known as the Black Maria.
Speaking during the 44th Anniversary Remembrance Service for the three murdered High Court judges at the Upper East Regional High Court in Bolgatanga, Mr. Namoo urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to publicly account for the deaths and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
According to him, the alleged victims include Aziz Iddrisu, Safianu Seidu, Shamsudeen Mohammed, Norbert Anamzoya, Boatbil Niah Sunday, Akologo Abilba, Morgan Anaba, Ayuba, and three unidentified persons from Navrongo.
Mr. Namoo argued that the deceased were denied their constitutional right to a fair trial, stressing that no individual should be deprived of life without due process. He maintained that the rule of law must prevail regardless of the allegations against any suspect.
"The individuals were killed without being allowed to stand trial before a competent court of law," he said, describing the alleged incidents as a serious affront to justice, human rights, and Ghana's constitutional democracy.
His remarks come amid recent intelligence-led operations by the IGP's Special Operations Team across parts of the Upper East Region, where dozens of suspects have been arrested in crackdowns targeting narcotics trafficking and other criminal activities. Police have maintained that the operations are aimed at restoring law and order in the region.
Lawyer Namoo has therefore appealed to the IGP to institute an independent investigation into the alleged killings, insisting that transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.
The Ghana Police Service is yet to officially respond to the allegations at the time of filing this report.

It is good to call for accountability. However, I didn't see that under Akufo-Addo's administration, when eight people were shot during elections. The NPP now sees clearly in opposition.
