Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako-Kissi, has called for urgent and coordinated action to address Ghana’s recurring flooding challenges, following recent rainstorms that caused destruction in parts of Accra.

His comments come after heavy rains on Monday, June 29, led to flooding in several communities, resulting in loss of lives, displacement of residents and damage to property, particularly in the capital.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily show on Tuesday, June 30, he expressed concern about the repeated loss of lives, especially children, and urged state institutions responsible for emergency response and infrastructure to improve their work.

"It's a very painful experience for those who have lost family members through flooding... when children who have a future's life are taken by flood, it's always so painful to me," he said.

Dr. Adomako-Kissi stressed that while property losses such as damaged vehicles are significant, human life must remain the priority in national disaster response efforts.

He specifically called on the Ghana National Fire Service to strengthen its response capacity and urged the Ministry of Finance to critically assess funding and reinvestment into the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

"I'm also pleading that the Finance Minister really carefully look at the reinvestment to NADMO... we want some preventative work, some dredging," he stated.

He further questioned the effectiveness of coordination among key sector ministries, particularly Works and Housing, arguing that drainage and flood prevention systems require greater visibility and urgency at the cabinet level.

The former MP also cautioned that the current flooding situation could worsen if proactive measures are not taken immediately, stressing that drainage blockages leading to backflow remain a major cause of urban flooding in Accra.
