The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, received a rousing welcome at Sankofa Square in Toronto, where he addressed a vibrant durbar and underscored the importance of culture and identity as the bedrock of Ghana’s global partnerships.
In his opening remarks to the Ghanaian diaspora community, the Asantehene urged them to remain rooted in their heritage.
“Do not lose your identity. Teach your children our language, customs, and values,” he said.
His Majesty emphasised that Ghanaians living abroad serve as the nation’s most influential ambassadors.
“You carry the resilience, the intellect, and the warm hospitality of our homeland in your daily lives,” he noted, reiterating the call to preserve cultural identity across generations.
While his engagements in Canada have centred on trade, green energy, and institutional partnerships, the Asantehene said the durbar was intentionally designed to highlight the cultural foundation that strengthens those relationships.
“Ghana is open for business, open for tourism, and open for collaboration. I invite our Canadian friends to experience Ghana through the food, the music, the textiles, and the arts displayed in this village,” he said.
“To our diaspora community in Toronto and across Canada, this village is a home away from home — a place to come together, to cheer, and to remember who you are.”
Otumfuo expressed deep appreciation to the government and people of Canada for creating an environment where Ghanaians can flourish while maintaining their cultural identity.
“The peaceful and welcoming environment you provide allows our people to thrive, build, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to Canadian society while proudly retaining their Ghanaian identity,” he added.
