'Attacks on African nationals unacceptable, undermine Ubuntu values' — South African Tourism

South African Tourism has condemned recent xenophobic-related incidents targeting foreign nationals in parts of the country.

The agency says the violence and unrest are damaging South Africa’s reputation as a leading tourism destination on the African continent.

The statement comes after weeks of reported attacks on foreign-owned shops and migrants during protests linked to illegal immigration concerns.

“As an organisation committed to promoting South Africa as a welcoming and inclusive destination, we unequivocally condemn all acts of intimidation, violence, discrimination and unlawful conduct directed at foreign nationals,” the agency said.

According to the statement issued on Thursday, May 28, the incidents have led to cancellations of travel bookings from several African countries, raising concerns within the tourism sector.

South African Tourism noted that while immigration challenges may be a legitimate public concern, such issues must be addressed through lawful state institutions and not through vigilante action.

“These actions are unacceptable, do not reflect the values of our democracy, and stand in direct opposition to the spirit of ‘Ubuntu’ that defines South Africa and its people,” it stated.

The agency stressed that the recent acts of violence do not represent the broader South African population, nor government policy.

It added that South Africa remains committed to being a safe and welcoming destination for visitors from across Africa and beyond.
