ECOWAS biometric ID will reduce fraud and strengthen border security — GIS

The Ghana Immigration Service has highlighted the importance of the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC), noting that the initiative will strengthen identity verification and reduce document fraud across the sub-region.

The ECOWAS Biometric Identity Card is among key initiatives adopted by the Authority of Heads of State and Government during the 46th ECOWAS Ordinary Summit held on December 14, 2014.

The initiative seeks to promote free movement within the ECOWAS region through secure identification systems aimed at tackling irregular migration and trans-border crimes.

Speaking at the opening of a media sensitisation workshop in Accra on Tuesday, May 26, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration and Head of Operations, Justice Amevor, said Ghana remains committed to regional integration and the free movement protocol.

According to him, Ghana is among the first ECOWAS member states to deploy the National Biometric Identity Card.

“Ghana is proud to be among the first member states to deploy the ENBIC. This reaffirms Ghana's commitment to regional integration and the free movement of persons protocol,” he said.

Justice Amevor noted that the Ghana Immigration Service sees the biometric card as a critical travel document that will improve border management operations.

“The Ghana Immigration Service, as the agency responsible for border management, sees ENBIC as a critical travel document, and if it becomes fully operational, it will enhance identity verification, reduce document fraud, and speed up processing at land, sea, and airports of entry and departure,” he stated.

He further explained that the system will strengthen border security by helping authorities establish the identity of card holders and curb irregular migration within the ECOWAS bloc.

The Deputy Commissioner also urged the media and stakeholders to support public education on the initiative to ensure wider understanding and acceptance across the region.
