HARARE, May 1 (Xinhua/GNA) — Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, on Friday reaffirmed the commitment to the principle of decent work, as a driver for national development.
In a speech marking International Workers’ Day, Mnangagwa said protecting the dignity of work is central to the country’s economic transformation.
The president noted that while the government has made efforts to stabilize the economy, workers continue to face strain from global supply chain disruptions and external shocks.
According to Mnangagwa, the government is currently modernizing occupational safety regulations, and prioritizing the formalization of employment to bolster growth.
“The challenge of casualization must be confronted and addressed. Where work is continuous, employment must be secure,” Mnangagwa said, adding that the practice of keeping workers on perpetual short-term contracts undermines their dignity and stability.
He further urged employers to maintain high labor standards, and called on the workforce to remain committed to productivity and excellence, to support the country’s ongoing development.
