Mali's Defense Minister General Sadio Camara, described as a powerful figure and Russia's key ally in the Sahel, and was killed in a car bomb attack at his residence in Kati.
His death was confirmed by multiple security sources to Jeune Afrique on April 26. The assault, attributed to JNIM (the al-Qaeda-linked Group for Support of Islam and Muslims), was reportedly carried out using a vehicle-borne bomb driven by a suicide attacker. The explosion was particularly powerful and completely destroyed the minister's residence.
The Broader Attack
The attacks on April 25 were one of the largest coordinated assaults in Mali in recent years. JNIM claimed responsibility for strikes on Bamako's international airport and four other cities in central and northern Mali.
Al-Qaeda affiliate JNIM confirmed in a statement that it coordinated with the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), and that both groups had targeted the homes of junta leader General Assimi Goita and Defense Minister Camara, among other sites. Al Jazeera described the scale and coordination of the attacks as "unprecedented."
The Malian army stated it had killed "several hundred" assailants and repelled the assault, with large-scale sweep operations underway in Bamako, Kati, and elsewhere.
Kidal Falls, Gao Rocked
The FLA claimed control of most of Kidal, with the governor taking refuge in a former UN peacekeeping camp. Fighting was also reported in Gao, with FLA spokesman Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane calling on Burkina Faso and Niger to "stay out of the ongoing events in Mali."
Aftermath
The government imposed a three-day overnight curfew (9 PM–6 AM) in Bamako's district. The government spokesperson reported 16 wounded but provided no official death toll.
The whereabouts of junta leader Assimi Goita remained unknown, and the government struggled to control the narrative as fighter’s flooded social media with images of their advances.
This is a rapidly evolving and very serious situation the killing of the defense minister marks one of the most significant blows to Mali's military junta in years.
