Sudanese National Examinations Amid Crisis: A Testament to Unity, Resilience and Educational Recovery

Sudanese National Examinations Amid Crisis: A Testament to Unity, Resilience and Educational Recovery

Amid an atmosphere marked by calm, discipline, and anticipation blended with hope for a better future, the Sudanese secondary school examinations commenced on April 13. More than 600,000 male and female students are sitting for the exams, distributed across 3,333 centers inside Sudan and an additional 333 centers abroad.

The noticeable increase in the number of students sitting for this year’s examinations, compared to previous years, reflects positive indicators of stability and significant recovery in the country’s education system following the brutal and terrorist aggression of April 2023, which primarily targeted infrastructure, especially educational institutions.

Here in Juba, the examination center witnessed high-level official attendance, led by the Sudanese Ambassador to South Sudan, alongside several officials from the Ministry of General Education in South Sudan. All expressed their appreciation for the excellent organization and the tremendous efforts exerted to ensure the success of this important educational milestone.

Approximately 1,330 students are sitting for the exams at the Juba center, the majority of whom are South Sudanese students. This reflects the depth of cooperation and integration between the two countries in the field of education, despite the exceptional challenges imposed by current circumstances.

This achievement would not have been possible without the generous initiative of the Government of Sudan, which reduced examination fees by 90%, exceptionally for all South Sudanese students, for the second consecutive year, in recognition of the difficult economic conditions facing the Republic of South Sudan and the strong social ties between the two nations.

In the same spirit of solidarity, over 1,200 South Sudanese refugee students are sitting for this year’s examinations in the Sudanese city of Kosti. That underscores the reciprocal nature of support between Sudan and South Sudan, highlighting how educational cooperation transcends borders and humanitarian challenges, reinforcing shared resilience and mutual responsibility.

But it would be remiss not to commend, the invaluable support extended by the government and people of South Sudan, which was instrumental in overcoming challenges and ensuring the successful conduct of the examinations—reflecting the deepest bonds of brotherhood and the spirit of cooperation between the two sisterly nations.

Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of this year’s examinations in Juba is the remarkable hosting of Sudanese students arriving from the Darfur states—a vivid testament to how these examinations embody Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity. Some of these students arrived only hours before the start of the exams, yet found all necessary arrangements in place, enabling them to sit without delay.

In a humanitarian gesture that underscores the deeper purpose of education, the Sudanese Embassy in Juba, in coordination with Al-Ahlam Schools, provided these students with safe shelter, accommodation, and meals—enabling them to continue their educational journey despite the challenges that had previously prevented them from sitting for exams in Sudan, offering them a renewed pathway toward a brighter future.

The epic scene of students from Darfur and Kordofan states converging from all directions—overcoming hardships and logistical challenges to sit for their exams in neighboring countries and safe states—is undeniable proof that this certificate represents the “firm bond” that unites the fragments of the nation.

These students carried not only their pens, but also the determination of an entire generation that refuses to have its history written through the barrels of guns, and insists instead on writing it through the light of knowledge.

In conclusion, the successful and orderly conduct of these examinations conveys a powerful message to the world: despite its hardships, Sudan continues to hold the guiding compass that leads its generations toward hope and enlightenme

The Sudanese certificate will endure as a “song of passage,” rising above the clamor of turmoil, and standing as a true testament that a nation which values education and safeguards its classrooms is one resilient to collapse and able to rise again through the skill and resolve of its people.
