Ghana has witnessed a significant increase in the importation of Toyota Voxy vehicles, with 3,570 units registered within the first two months of 2026, according to the National Roads and Safety Authority (NRSA).
The Authority disclosed in a technical report presented on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, that the number of Voxy registrations between January and February alone almost matches the total of 3,687 units recorded for the whole of 2025.
The report noted that while only 34 percent of the registered Voxy vehicles are classified as commercial, field observations indicate that a large number of privately registered units are being used for commercial passenger transport.
The NRSA expressed concern over this emerging trend, citing safety implications associated with the use of the vehicle for purposes it was not designed for. Correspondence from Toyota Tsusho Corporation shows that only the HiAce, GranAce, and Coaster models are intended for commercial passenger operations.
The Voxy, the company explained, is designed as a minivan primarily for young and middle income families, with a ground clearance of 150 millimetres, which is lower than the 185 millimetres of the HiAce, a factor considered important for long distance travel on Ghana’s road network.
Despite this, drivers have indicated that many Voxy vehicles used for commercial transport are modified with longer struts and larger tyres in an attempt to improve ground clearance.
The NRSA report cautioned that such modifications may compromise safety, especially on highways where passenger vehicles are subjected to rough terrain and higher operational stress. This concern forms part of the basis for the Authority’s decision to prohibit the use of the Voxy for commercial passenger transport.
