The journey of the National Democratic Congress from opposition to power has always been powered by the commitment of its grassroots members. These are the men and women who stand in rain and sun, who debate passionately in their communities, and who defend the party even when the odds are against them. Their dedication deserves recognition, inclusion, and above all, empowerment.
Empowerment should be strategic and far-reaching. When one grassroots member is placed in a position of responsibility, the impact multiplies. A single empowered individual can touch the lives of at least ten others. If an appointee or elected official actively empowers twenty grassroots members, this could transform the lives of over 200 people. This ripple effect strengthens not only the individuals but the party and the nation as a whole.
Opportunities for the grassroots should not wait for formal approvals from the finance ministry alone. Officials can leverage internally generated funds (IGF) to create employment, skill acquisition programs, or mentorship schemes. Every action should be aimed at producing long-term impact rather than temporary relief. Grassroots members must also rise to the occasion but lazy, selfish, or opportunistic individuals who do not contribute meaningfully should step aside to allow dedicated comrades to benefit.
Leaders and appointees must remain accessible. Picking calls, engaging with constituents, and being responsive should not end with winning elections. This continuity ensures that power is not a barrier but a bridge to progress. Annual reviews of officials’ engagement can serve as a benchmark for accountability, highlighting those who are performing well and those who are drifting away from the party’s values.
Unity, transparency, and selflessness must define the current crop of leaders. By working together, nurturing the grassroots, and ensuring that opportunities are accessible, the National Democratic Congress can set a precedent for positive, sustainable governance that lasts for generations.
We shall return!
