Residents across the Ga State are set to observe a month-long restriction on noise-making as part of preparations toward this year’s Homowo Festival, a significant cultural celebration of the Ga people.
The directive, issued by the Ga Traditional Council, will take effect from Monday, May 4, to Thursday, June 4, 2026. It was announced at a press briefing in Accra by Nii Ayikoi Otoo, who serves as President of the Ga-Dangme Council.
According to him, the annual observance is deeply rooted in tradition and is intended to create an atmosphere of calm, reflection, and spiritual preparation ahead of the festivities. As part of the restrictions, activities that generate noise—such as drumming, clapping, and the use of musical instruments—will not be permitted during the period.
Places of worship have been specifically advised to limit their services to indoor activities. The use of outdoor loudspeakers by churches and mosques, as well as public preaching with megaphones, will not be allowed throughout the ban.
The Council noted that while the directive covers the Ga State broadly, communities including Osu, La, Teshie, Nungua, Tema, Prampram, and Kpone will announce their respective timelines after the initial start date.
To ensure compliance, a joint task force comprising members of the Regional Security Council and the Ghana Police Service will be deployed to monitor activities and take action against violators.
The Traditional Council also appealed to the public, including visitors, to respect the directive, emphasizing that such customary practices are safeguarded under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana as part of Ghana’s cultural heritage.
