Only 1,000 out of 180,000 applicants to be recruited into Ghana Immigration Service – Interior Minister

Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka has revealed that only 1,000 applicants will be recruited into the Ghana Immigration Service from more than 180,000 young people who applied during the latest recruitment exercise.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, March 11, the minister sought to address public concerns surrounding recruitment into the country’s security agencies. He explained that the large number of applications highlights the intense demand for jobs among Ghana’s youth.

According to him, the Immigration Service received an overwhelming response from young people across the country eager to join the institution.

“The total of over 180,000 young men wanted to join the Ghana Immigration Service. But the interesting thing is that today, the Ghana Immigration Service, the strength, from the Comptroller General to the last officer, stands at 18,300. Less than 20,000, yet you have 180,000 opting to join,” he stated.

Mr. Muntaka explained that despite the high number of applicants, the Service does not have the capacity to absorb many recruits at once due to limitations in training facilities and accommodation.

He noted that the current infrastructure of the Immigration Service can only support the training of about 1,000 new officers under the ongoing recruitment exercise.

“Unfortunately, because of the physical space, we could only have space for 1,000,” he said.

The Interior Minister said the situation underscores the intense competition for positions in the security services and reflects the broader challenge of employment creation for Ghana’s rapidly growing youth population.
