The Convention People’s Party (CPP), in a press release signed by its General Secretary, Comrade Kwame Nkrumah Botsio, has firmly stated that Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was not a dictator, contrary to long‑standing claims often repeated in public discourse.
Addressing criticisms surrounding policies such as the Preventive Detention Act (PDA) and the move toward a One‑Party State, Comrade Botsio explained that these measures were not imposed unilaterally. Rather, they were formally presented to the people of Ghana through Parliament and national referenda, where they received overwhelming approval through the ballot box.
According to the CPP, these democratic processes demonstrate that the policies in question reflected the will of the Ghanaian people at the time, and therefore cannot be used as evidence to label Dr. Nkrumah a dictator.
Below is the full press release issued by the CPP as part of activities marking the 60th anniversary of the overthrow of Ghana’s First Republic.
