The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called on the John Dramani Mahama government and Parliament to return all party properties that were confiscated following the 1966 overthrow of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, to mark 60 years since the military coup, the party expressed deep concerns over the continued impact of the seizure of its assets.
“Our assets, including buildings which were party offices, and frozen party accounts, inter alia, were legitimately acquired by our forefathers, but were illegally seized,” the CPP said in the statement.
The party described the confiscation as part of a historical injustice that has affected its operations for decades, calling for corrective action to restore what it says is rightfully theirs.
The CPP also commended President John Dramani Mahama and the parliamentary majority for moves aimed at giving the party justice after years of marginalization.
“The Convention People’s Party wants to… express our profound gratitude to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s government, and the majority in Parliament for giving the CPP justice after all these years,” the statement said.
The party announced plans to reopen its doors to former members, including those who left due to grievances or were suspended or expelled for breaching the party’s constitution.
“This is part of the Party’s strategy to Rebuild, Reconcile and Reorganise the Party,” the CPP said, emphasizing its commitment to strengthening internal unity ahead of future political engagements.
