Management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has interdicted two doctors and two nurses over their alleged failure to provide emergency medical care to a hit-and-run victim who later died.

The decision was announced in a statement issued on Monday, February 23, 2026, following widespread public concern about the circumstances that led to the death. Hospital authorities indicated that an internal committee has been set up to investigate the conduct of the medical personnel involved and to establish the full facts of the incident.

According to the statement, all staff connected to the matter have been directed to cooperate fully with the investigative committee to ensure a fair, transparent and comprehensive inquiry. Management assured the public that the hospital remains committed to accountability, transparency and the delivery of quality healthcare, adding that further updates will be provided after the investigation is concluded.

The deceased, 29-year-old Charles Amissah, an engineer with Promasidor Ghana Limited, sustained severe shoulder injuries in a hit-and-run accident at the Circle Overpass in Accra on February 6, 2026. He was initially attended to by Emergency Medical Services personnel who stabilised him and prepared him for transfer to a hospital.

However, he was reportedly turned away by the Police Hospital, Ridge Hospital and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital due to the unavailability of beds. Efforts by the ambulance team to secure admission elsewhere were unsuccessful, despite warnings that moving him again could prove fatal.

While still at Korle Bu, Amissah went into cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered but he could not be revived. He was later pronounced dead and his body conveyed to the mortuary, with the EMS team returning to base in the early hours of February 7.
