The metaverse has dominated conversations in technology and education in recent years, yet many people still struggle to grasp what it truly is or how it functions. The Oxford Dictionary defines the metaverse as “a virtual‑reality space in which users can interact within computer‑generated environments.”
Africa WP Metaverse represents a pioneering step in this space, offering a first‑of‑its‑kind experience that showcases the flags of the African continent.
Chancellor Jackson has been building in the metaverse since 2022, integrating virtual environments into global WordCamp conferences. His work transforms traditional conferences into interactive learning experiences and expands access for individuals with disabilities and mobility challenges. Africa has been a direct beneficiary of these innovations since 2022.
Many metaverse experiences today fall within the gaming ecosystem. Platforms like Minecraft and Roblox are often described as metaverse environments because they allow users to interact, build, and collaborate in shared virtual spaces. Increasingly, these platforms are supported and enhanced by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Across Africa, schools are beginning to merge AI and metaverse tools to serve a growing digital community within rapidly expanding tech ecosystems.
Newer environments such as Meta’s Horizon Worlds are designed primarily for Virtual Reality (VR) headsets. Spatial, however, offers broader accessibility, functioning seamlessly on VR headsets, smartphones, tablets, desktops, and laptops. As a result, the term “metaverse” has evolved into a broad descriptor for virtual spaces where users create avatars and interact with others in immersive digital worlds.
Spatial.io has emerged as a leading metaverse platform, leveraging VR technology to deliver deeper levels of immersion. For creators, Spatial stands out as one of the most effective platforms for building meaningful virtual experiences and is well‑positioned to shape the future of metaverse development.
In 2025, Chancellor Jackson shared several metaverse experiences across Africa, including:
- WordCamp Lira 2025 — https://tinyurl.com/5n73yat9
- WordCamp Masaka 2025 — https://tinyurl.com/2hxezpj8
- WordCamp Mukono 2025 — https://tinyurl.com/yfm8fd7d
- WordCamp Jinja 2025 — https://tinyurl.com/bp93nn8v
- WordCamp Nairobi 2025 — https://tinyurl.com/3k9tcjv8
One of Spatial’s greatest strengths is its accessibility. While optimized for VR, it remains fully functional through standard web browsers and mobile devices. This flexibility helps address accessibility challenges across Africa, particularly for individuals with physical disabilities. The African worlds created by Chancellor Jackson enable global participants to engage remotely, create avatars, and collaborate without the need for physical attendance.
The future of the metaverse in Africa will shape education, commerce, business, and international trade. As technology advances, the ways people learn, work, and connect will continue to evolve, with VR and metaverse platforms playing an increasingly influential role.
A growing number of emerging virtual experiences are intentionally designed to reflect Africa’s “soil and soul,” fostering cultural exchange and strengthening community connections. While challenges remain, these efforts mark an important step toward building metaverse environments that authentically represent Africa’s diversity, landscapes, histories, and global influence.
