Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, has announced the arrest of 141 suspects following a coordinated early-morning security operation targeting organised cybercrime networks involved in Mobile Money (MoMo) fraud and other online financial scams.
The intelligence-led operation was carried out by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, National Security and the Ghana Immigration Service Headquarters.
It took place across key locations in Tabora and Lashibi in the Greater Accra Region.
According to the Minister, 100 suspects were arrested in Tabora, while 41 others were apprehended in Lashibi, bringing the total number of arrests to 141.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects are believed to be Nigerian nationals.
Law enforcement agencies also retrieved 38 laptops and 150 mobile phones suspected to have been used in the commission of cyber-enabled financial crimes.
The devices have been seized for forensic analysis as investigations continue.
In a related development, the Ghanaian landlord who accommodated about 100 of the suspects in his residence was also arrested.
Authorities stressed that property owners have a responsibility to ensure their premises are not used to facilitate or perpetuate criminal activities.
The suspects are alleged to have been involved in a range of cybercrimes, including Mobile Money fraud, romance scams, sextortion, Business Email Compromise (BEC) and wire fraud.
Mr. Nartey George stated that forensic examination of the seized devices is currently underway and assured the public that all individuals found culpable will be processed in accordance with Ghanaian law.
He urged the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious digital activities and continue to support national efforts to combat cybercrime.
While reaffirming Ghana’s openness to foreigners engaged in legitimate business, the Minister issued a stern warning to criminal elements, stating that cybercriminals would be identified, arrested, and dealt with decisively under the country's laws.
