The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Nadowli Kaleo District, Hon. Mary Haruna, has urged young people in the district to adopt discipline, integrity, and community service as key pillars for building a prosperous future.
Hon. Marry Haruna made the call when she addressed participants at the Nadowli Youth Summit held on Monday, December 22, 2025, at the McCoy College of Education in Nadowli.
The summit was held on the theme “Building Responsible Youth in the Nadowli Kaleo District.”
Hon. Haruna described the summit as a “turning point” in the district’s efforts to shape the character and future of its young people, stressing that youth are not only leaders of tomorrow but active partners in today’s development agenda.
“The true measure of any society is found not in its wealth or resources, but in the character, discipline and sense of responsibility of its youth,” she stated.
The DCE highlighted government interventions aimed at addressing youth unemployment and empowering young people, commending the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama for prioritising youth development.
She cited the establishment of the Ministry of Youth Development and the rollout of the Adwumawura Programme as key initiatives.
According to her, the Adwumawura Programme is designed to support the creation of 10,000 youth-led businesses annually through training, mentorship and access to funding, describing it as a clear demonstration of government’s commitment to the future of Ghanaian youth.
“Youth empowerment is not just a policy choice; it is a national priority and a moral obligation,” she noted.
Hon. Haruna also revealed that the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has expanded its programmes in the Nadowli Kaleo District, engaging a total of 81 young people under its Community Support Module.
Giving a breakdown of the beneficiaries, the DCE revealed that 29 Community Police Assistants, 12 with the Fire Service, 24 with the Ambulance Service, eight with the Prisons Service, six Arabic tutors and two under the Insurance Commission have been enrolled, adding that the beneficiaries receive a monthly allowance of GH¢800.
Touching on challenges such as unemployment, limited opportunities and negative social influences, the DCE urged the youth to take advantage of opportunities in agriculture, entrepreneurship, digital innovation and community service.
She encouraged young people to pursue education and skills development, embrace entrepreneurship, and uphold peace, unity and respect for diversity, describing responsible living as a pathway to leadership.
“As District Chief Executive, I call on every young person to translate the ideals of responsibility into concrete action, adding that the future of the Nadowli Kaleo District is in the collective hands."
Hon. Haruna expressed hope that the summit would mark the beginning of a renewed commitment to youth responsibility and empowerment, adding that history would remember the current generation as one that laid the foundation for a stronger and more prosperous Nadowli Kaleo District.
The summit brought together traditional leaders, government officials, youth groups and other stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for nurturing responsible and empowered youth in the district.
