We’ll reward St. Peter’s SHS for ending double track ahead of gov’t — Education Minister

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that his ministry will reward St. Peter’s Senior High School for becoming the first institution to end the double-track system.

The double-track system was introduced by the NPP government in the 2018/2019 academic year to absorb increased enrolment following the implementation of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy.

Under the system, students were divided into green and gold tracks, with alternating periods of schooling and vacation.

St. Peter’s Senior High School, located at Nkwatia-Kwahu in the Eastern Region, is reported to have implemented internal measures to end the rotational system ahead of the government’s planned timeline.

Speaking at an event in Accra on Wednesday, December 24, the minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, said the school will receive infrastructural support.

“I should commend St. Peter’s as one of the first schools to successfully end the double-track system, and we are going to reward them with infrastructure for going ahead of government with their own intervention,” he said.

Mr Iddrisu stressed the need for targeted investment in senior high school infrastructure to expand capacity and fully eliminate the double-track system by 2027.

He added that reduced contact hours under the current system are not conducive to effective teaching and learning.
