WED, 24 DEC 2025

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it has directed a joint committee to study the report of the Constitution Review Committee and will soon make its position public.

The committee, chaired by Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh, presented its report to President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, December 22.

Among the recommendations are proposals to extend the presidential term from the current four years to five years and to lower the presidential age limit from 40 to 30.

The committee also proposed a complete separation of the legislature from the executive, where no Member of Parliament would be appointed as a minister, as well as capping parliamentary seats at the current 276.

In a social media post on Tuesday, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, said the party had already participated in the review process through a specially constituted team.

“As part of participating in the Constitutional Review process, the leadership of the NPP constituted a joint committee led by Hon. Anyimadu and Frank Davies Esq. to present proposals to the Constitutional Review Committee,” he stated.

He said that following the submission of the committee’s final report to the President, the party’s leadership had taken steps to carefully assess the recommendations.

“The General Secretary of the Party has directed the joint committee to study the proposals and advise the National Council of the Party accordingly,” Nana B noted.

He urged party members to exercise restraint in commenting publicly on the proposals until the internal review is completed, assuring that the party’s official position will be communicated in due course.
