Nearly 72% of voters say 62 years and above is too old to be President — Poll

A new opinion poll by independent research firm Global InfoAnalytics suggests a growing public preference for younger leadership in Ghana.

The survey found that nearly 72% of voters believe persons aged 62 years and above are too old to be elected President.

It also revealed that about 58% of respondents think the country should soon elect a younger person as President.

In a social media post on Tuesday, December 23, Executive Director of the firm Mussa Dankwah said the findings reflect shifting voter attitudes, especially in the context of ongoing constitutional reform discussions.

“As Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh recommends lowering the presidential age limit to 30 years, older candidates face a significant hurdle, as a new poll by Global InfoAnalytics shows that nearly 72% of voters say 62 years and above is too old to be elected as President,” the post said.

It added that, “the poll also shows that 58% of voters say it is time for Ghana to elect young leaders.”

The poll was released against the backdrop of recommendations by the Constitution Review Committee to reduce the minimum age requirement for presidential candidates from 40 to 30 years.

The committee’s proposals are contained in its final report presented to President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, December 22.

The report also recommends that the President’s salary, allowances and facilities be subjected to tax, with an Independent Public Emoluments Commission determining the remuneration of the President and other Article 71 office holders.
