The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has given unanimous backing to President John Dramani Mahama as the sub-region’s sole contender for the position of Chairperson of the African Union when the rotating leadership returns to West Africa in 2027.
This endorsement was announced at the Council’s meeting in Abuja and will be presented to the Authority of Heads of State and Government for formal approval when they meet on Sunday.
Ghana’s delegation, led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, expressed profound gratitude for the confidence shown in the President.
In a statement, the Ministry said Ghana is grateful to ECOWAS for the support given to President Mahama, describing him as a visionary and committed Pan African leader. The statement added that Ghana will continue to make the continent proud.
Once confirmed by the Heads of State, President Mahama will carry the sub region’s flag in the continental contest, reinforcing West Africa’s claim to the AU’s top leadership role in 2027.
