NPP slams Tamale High Court for annulment of Kpandai Parliamentary result

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fiercely condemned the Tamale High Court’s decision to nullify the 2024 parliamentary elections in the Kpandai Constituency, with the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, describing the ruling as an alarming attack on Ghana’s democratic foundations.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Henry Nana Boakye said the party was compelled to address what he called a brazen subversion of justice following the court’s November 24, 2025, verdict ordering a rerun of the election.

Clad in black attire to signal a sombre mood, he told journalists that the decision posed a grave threat to electoral stability and the integrity of judicial oversight in Ghana.

According to the NPP national organiser, the High Court’s ruling ignored basic numerical realities.

He explained that the NPP’s parliamentary candidate secured victory with a clear lead of 3,734 votes, a margin he stressed could not be overturned even if every irregularity alleged by the petitioners was sustained.

Nana Boakye noted that the petitioners had themselves admitted that their challenge concerned results from only 41 polling stations, involving a total of about 500 votes. He questioned how 500 votes could overturn a lead of 3,734, insisting that the judgment defied both mathematics and common sense.

He further accused the judge of reciting the legal test for evaluating election petitions but refusing to apply it properly, calling the conduct “judicial fraud.”

He argued that both Ghana’s election regulations and binding Supreme Court precedents make it clear that no election should be nullified if the proven irregularities cannot alter the final outcome.

He insisted that the High Court completely disregarded this principle by sidestepping the crucial “affected results” requirement and instead leaping from allegations of irregularities to the drastic step of annulling the entire election.

Nana Boakye described the ruling as a dangerously reckless departure from established electoral law and warned that if such judgments are allowed to stand, they could invite widespread abuse of the judicial process by losing candidates seeking to disrupt democratic outcomes.

He said the verdict poses a direct threat to the stability of Ghana’s election adjudication system and could sow chaos across the country if upheld.

He stressed that while the NPP holds deep respect for the judiciary, that respect does not require acceptance of what he called a gross miscarriage of justice. He argued that true respect for judicial institutions involves speaking up when the law is violated and when constitutional principles are ignored.

He vowed that the party would challenge the ruling through every legitimate legal avenue available, citing Section 20 of PNDC Law 284, which sets out the standards for determining election petitions.

Henry Nana Boakye called on Ghanaians to remain vigilant and to guard the nation’s democracy against decisions that undermine the people’s will. He declared that the party would not sit silently while such a precedent takes root, emphasising that the NPP stands ready to resist any ruling that threatens the foundations of Ghana’s constitutional order.
