The Mpohor-Fiase District on Friday marked the 41st National Farmers’ Day with a colourful and well-attended ceremony that brought together farmers, traditional leaders, government officials, development partners, security services and community members. The event celebrated the resilience, sacrifice and ingenuity of local farmers who continue to play a pivotal role in food security and economic growth.

The theme for this year’s observance, "Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana And Secure The Future", echoed national efforts to make agriculture more responsive, modern and productive. The district’s celebration showcased not only the achievements of outstanding farmers, but also the collective commitment of institutions working to strengthen the agricultural value chain.

The highlight of the day was the recognition of Mr. Nicholas Homia as the Overall Best Farmer for the Mpohor-Fiase District. A successful businessman and dedicated farmer, Mr. Homia has over the years invested heavily in both crop and livestock production.

He currently cultivates 20 acres of cocoa, 10 acres of oil palm and 5 acres of rubber plantation. His livestock enterprise is equally impressive, comprising 500 pigs, 100 fowls, 50 goats and 70 sheep. His operations provide jobs for community members and contribute significantly to the district’s food supply.

Mr. Homia’s award celebrated his discipline, innovation and willingness to embrace improved farming practices. His success story encouraged both new and established farmers to approach agriculture with dedication, creativity and a long-term vision.

In his address, the Member of Parliament, Hon. Kofi Bentil, commended the hardworking farmers whose efforts continue to feed the nation and sustain the local economy. He reminded the gathering that the prosperity of communities depends largely on the resilience and commitment of farmers who work through varying conditions to ensure food availability.

He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that improve access to credit, modern equipment, extension services and farm-to-market roads. The MP also congratulated all award winners and encouraged the youth to take advantage of emerging opportunities in agriculture.

The Deputy NADMO Director for the Western Region, Daniel Mawuli Agbesi, emphasized the important link between agriculture and national resilience. He acknowledged the challenges farmers face, including flooding, pest attacks, bushfires and the growing threats associated with climate change.

He assured farmers of NADMO’s commitment to improving early warning systems, strengthening community education and working with district authorities to reduce disaster risks in farming areas. He also encouraged farmers to adopt climate-smart practices that protect livelihoods and enhance sustainability.

Mr. Stephen Daamah, CSR/CR Manager at Ghana National Gas Company, expressed the company’s appreciation for the role of farmers in national development. He used the platform to highlight the growing risk posed by illegal mining activities near the company’s pipeline installations.

He cautioned that such activities not only threaten farmland but also endanger critical national infrastructure and the safety of communities. He called for stronger collaboration among community leaders, farmers and security agencies to protect the pipeline network. He assured the gathering that Ghana Gas remains committed to promoting safety and community well-being.

Delivering the keynote address, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Sophia Aubyn, praised farmers for their resilience and contributions to local development. She highlighted ongoing government interventions meant to strengthen the agricultural sector.

She touched on the Feed Ghana Program, which continues to provide subsidised inputs, improved seeds and extension support across the district. She also stressed the importance of the Planting for Export and Rural Development initiative, which is helping farmers invest in cash crops such as cashew, coconut, coffee and oil palm.

Hon. Aubyn noted that livestock farmers are also benefiting from the “Nkokonketinketi” initiative, which offers improved breeds and better veterinary services. She added that government is committed to expanding irrigation systems to reduce reliance on rainfall and ensure year-round food production.

The DCE further mentioned ongoing efforts to improve feeder roads and farm tracks to ease transportation of produce and reduce post-harvest losses. She encouraged the youth to invest in agriculture and highlighted district-level partnerships aimed at providing training, mentorship and access to land.

She concluded by urging all stakeholders to continue supporting initiatives that enhance productivity and build a resilient agricultural sector.

The ceremony featured cultural displays, an exhibition of farm produce and the presentation of awards to hardworking farmers across various categories. The event reaffirmed the importance of agriculture to the district’s development and highlighted the collaborative efforts of government agencies, private institutions and community leaders.

The 41st National Farmers’ Day in the Mpohor-Fiase District ended with renewed hope and a shared commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector for sustained prosperity.
