We are looking at how we can use AI to reduce maternal mortalities — Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health has announced plans to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other digital tools to help tackle rising challenges in Ghana’s health system.

The ministry explained that health delivery continues to face growing operational complexity as patient numbers rise and chronic illnesses increase.

Speaking at the media launch of the 2025 Future of Digital Countries (FDC) Summit in Accra on Wednesday, Director of Research, Statistics and Information Management, Dr. Wisdom Atiwoto, said the ministry has identified key areas where technology can play a transformative role, particularly in reducing maternal mortalities.

“We want to see how we can further reduce the burden of maternal deaths using AI, and this is something we are working on with the Ministry of Communications and the UNDP,” he said.

He noted that AI-powered tools are also being explored to strengthen clinical audits, improve supervision, and enhance adherence monitoring in hospitals.

Dr. Atiwoto added that the ministry is equally targeting digital solutions to tackle the persistent “no bed syndrome” in major health centres.

“We are trying to see how we can leverage AI to manage emergency room beds,” he said.

Beyond that, the ministry wants to use AI to cut supply chain leakages, enhance real-time data visibility, and support wider health financing reforms.

According to him, partnerships and investments, especially in rural connectivity and data centre development, remain crucial for long-term progress.

The 2025 FDC Summit, he said, presents an opportunity for government, technology firms and investors to collaborate in strengthening the country's digital health architecture.

Organized in partnership with the Africa Center for Digital Transformation (ACDT) and Future Digital Centres (FDC), the event will focus on accelerating Africa's digital transformation through discussions on policy, innovation, cybersecurity, and investment.

Key topics include the digital economy, cybersecurity, AI, and building resilient digital ecosystems, with participation from government leaders, industry experts, and media.
