Igbo Leader in Ghana Eze Ihenetu drags Hassan Ayariga to court over alleged defamation

The Paramount Leader of the Igbo Community in Ghana, Eze Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, has filed a defamation suit against the founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, at the Accra High Court.

The case, lodged on October 1, 2025, stems from comments Mr. Ayariga allegedly made during an interview on the Frontline Show on My CTV GH on July 19, 2025, which were later circulated widely on social media.

According to court filings, Mr. Ayariga allegedly described Eze Ihenetu as a “scammer” and a “big problem” for some Nigerians in Ghana.

He is also accused of claiming that the Igbo leader was involved in money laundering, running human trafficking and prostitution networks, and controlling most Nigerian women in Ghana. Mr. Ayariga is alleged to have accused Eze Ihenetu of “destroying Ghana” and called for his expulsion from the country.

Eze Ihenetu, who has lived in Ghana for more than three decades and operates businesses in both Ghana and Nigeria, insists the allegations are false, malicious, and have gravely harmed his reputation. He claims the remarks have exposed him to public ridicule, death threats, and significant financial losses.

The Igbo leader is seeking a declaration from the court that the statements were defamatory, as well as an order compelling Mr. Ayariga to retract them and issue an apology through the same media platforms.

He is also demanding GH¢50 million in general damages and USD 5.6 million in special damages for the cancellation of two business contracts, namely a poultry farm project and a funeral home venture.

In addition, he is requesting a perpetual injunction to prevent Mr. Ayariga from repeating the alleged defamatory remarks.

Eze Ihenetu is being represented by Muniru M. Kassim of Obour, Minta & Co. Solicitors. The court has ordered Mr. Ayariga to enter an appearance within eight days of being served with the writ.
