Oyo-based entrepreneur, philanthropist, youth mobilizer, and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Chief Salako Amekunlooye, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honouring the Nigerian women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, following their triumphant campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Super Falcons stunned the continent with a dramatic comeback in the final against host nation Morocco, overturning a two-goal deficit to secure a 3-2 victory in Rabat. The win marked Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title—further cementing their dominance in African women’s football.
In response to their historic achievement, President Tinubu announced an extensive reward package: each player will receive $100,000, technical and backroom staff will get $50,000 each, and all members of the squad and crew will be awarded three-bedroom apartments in the Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Abuja. In addition, they have been conferred with national honours—Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Amekunlooye, a member of the South West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA’23), lauded President Tinubu’s actions as a watershed moment for sports recognition in Nigeria.
“I feel highly elated and fulfilled to see President Tinubu doing what successive governments have failed to do in terms of reward for hardwork and success. I am also happy to see that Mr. President is putting the right infrastructure in place to nurture talents and build capacity for sports development. Impressively, we now have a President who not only understands elite competition, but deeply values grassroots sports with clarity of thought.”
He praised the President’s strategic vision, noting the renewed optimism within the sporting community under Tinubu’s leadership.
“President Tinubu has demonstrated that he is a leader who nurtures and rewards excellence. With his consistent support, Nigeria's sports ecosystem now has a clear direction, and a purpose-driven paradigm shift.”
Amekunlooye described the moment as the beginning of a new chapter in Nigeria’s sporting history, one that offers “clear reassurance” to citizens about the country’s future under Tinubu. He also extended appreciation to the Super Falcons’ coaching and technical team and the Nigerian people for rallying behind the national team.
“I also extend my gratitude to all the members of the technical and coaching crew of the Super Falcons for a job well done. Similarly, my appreciation goes to every Nigerian who stands with our superlative athletes.”
He further highlighted President Tinubu’s passion for sports, pointing to the clearing of outstanding bonuses owed to the Super Eagles from the last AFCON tournament and his recent approval of arrears for the Super Falcons.
“President Tinubu in his magnanimity cleared the backlog owed to the Super Eagles during last year’s AFCON, and he has also approved the outstanding allowances for the Super Falcons.”
Amekunlooye reaffirmed his support for Tinubu’s grassroots sports development drive, expressing confidence that the President’s commitment will empower youth and energize communities nationwide.
