When the Tap Turns Toxic: A Wake-Up Call on Household Water Safety in Ghana

Water is life but what if the water we consume every day quietly threatens the very life it is meant to sustain?

As a research scientist with a passion for public health and environmental safety, I feel a strong obligation to bring urgent attention to an issue that affects us all, our household water quality. In a recent peer-reviewed study conducted with a team of researchers from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and published in the Journal of Water Research, we uncovered concerning levels of chemical and microbial contaminants in domestic water sources in Kumasi. The findings raise important concerns with meaningful implications for public health and household safety.

The study, titled “Investigating Household Water Quality Concerns in Kumasi, Ghana: Health Risks and Potential Implications”, involved the systematic collection and analysis of water from boreholes, hand-dug wells, and piped systems. Using FDA-approved methodologies, we tested these samples for a wide range of contaminants. Our findings highlighted issues that warrant serious attention:

  • Significantly elevated levels of nitrate and coliform bacteria were found in several samples, indicators of fecal contamination.
  • Toxic heavy metals such as lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) were found in several samples, both of which are associated with long-term organ damage, particularly in children.
  • Health risk assessments revealed both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks, particularly alarming for children, whose developing systems are more vulnerable to toxicity.

Root Causes: Leaks in the System
The study does not leave us guessing. The contamination, it reveals, is not by chance but by design or rather, lack of it. Faulty pipelines, poor urban planning, leaking manholes, and the disturbing proximity of water sources to septic tanks are major contributors. In many areas, boreholes and wells are located near unlined pit latrines, creating a perfect storm for groundwater pollution.

And if this is happening in Kumasi, one of Ghana’s most developed cities, what does it say about rural or peri-urban communities?

A Bigger Question: How Did We Get Here?

We must ask: Why are we still struggling with something as basic as clean water? Why do we allow poor planning, maintenance neglect, and infrastructural decay to endanger our families?

Is it time to stop viewing safe water as a development target and start treating it as a human right?

Because every drop that carries contaminants is a potential tragedy waiting to unfold, a child getting sick, a parent developing chronic illness, a community robbed of its future health.

A Call for Proactive Action
We must move from reaction to prevention. We cannot wait for disease outbreaks or alarming mortality rates to act. Ghana needs a multi-stakeholder response: stronger regulation, real-time water quality monitoring, community education, and investment in infrastructure.

  • Every household must take steps to ascertain the quality of the water they rely on, as awareness is the first line of defense against hidden health risks.
  • Local assemblies must enforce zoning laws that prevent the construction of water points near sanitation hazards.
  • The Ghana Water Company and EPA must step up oversight.
  • Households must be empowered through public education to test and treat their own water.

Hope Through Science
Despite the dire findings, the study offers hope. With the right reforms, the risk is preventable. Science has shown us where the danger lies, it is now up to leadership and citizens alike to act.

The study represents the combined efforts of dedicated professionals and academics.
