“Come Out Now!”: Police Urge Teen Murder Suspect to Surrender in Downtown Hamilton Killing

By Stephen Armah Quaye || Toronto-Canada

With time running out and a city in mourning, Hamilton Police have issued a public and powerful call to a 17-year-old suspect in the tragic shooting death of Belinda Sarkodie: turn yourself in—before it’s too late.

As the sun dipped below the horizon on Thursday, a city still shaken by gun violence waited for justice. Hamilton Police issued a direct and urgent plea to the 17-year-old suspect wanted in the July 11 fatal shooting of 26-year-old Belinda Sarkodie, urging him to surrender peacefully and seek legal counsel.

Hamilton Police will not stop until he is taken into custody,” the force declared in a forceful press release signed by Jackie Penman, Manager of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs.

The tragic incident occurred near King Street East and James Street North, when gunfire intended for a group of individuals in the bustling downtown area instead claimed the life of Sarkodie—an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.

The accused teen is facing charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder. Despite the execution of two search warrants at Hamilton residences where the suspect was believed to be hiding, he remains at large.

Police are actively warning the public: do not approach the suspect. “If you see him or know where he is, call Hamilton Police immediately at 905-546-4925 or 911,” the advisory stated. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.

The urgency of the investigation escalated with the issuance of a temporary judicial order allowing publication of the youth’s name and photograph. But that authorization expires at midnight, July 18, after which media are legally barred from publishing or sharing the teen’s identity unless a new court order is granted.

As investigators continue their relentless search, they also reminded the public that aiding a fugitive is a criminal offense.

“Come out now,” reads the subtext of their final message—a call for responsibility, justice, and an end to fear in the heart of Hamilton.
