Omane Boamah orders probe into alleged military vandalism in Bawku

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah is urging calm in Bawku following a controversial incident in which personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces are alleged to have destroyed a statue of the revered Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.

The incident, which has triggered widespread anger and heightened tensions in the already fragile area, has prompted swift intervention from the Minister, who announced on Facebook that an official inquiry has been launched to establish the facts.

“We are, once again, urging restraint and calm in Bawku regarding the latest developments as of yesterday,” Dr. Boamah posted on Monday, July 14, 2025.

According to the Minister, a full investigation is underway to determine what happened and who may be responsible. He assured the public that appropriate action will be taken once the probe is complete.

“Once again, let us ensure restraint,” he added, appealing to all parties to prioritise peace as the government works to clarify the circumstances surrounding the alleged act.

The Defence Minister’s call comes in the wake of sharp criticism from Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga, who earlier condemned what he described as reckless and unacceptable conduct by some military personnel in the area, including the destruction of the statue and reported acts of brutality against civilians.

As tensions simmer, the government is under growing pressure to hold those responsible accountable and prevent further escalation in the conflict-prone municipality.
