Residents of Bronkon New Life in the Afigya Kwabre South District are calling for immediate government support as a deteriorating wooden footbridge in their community poses a serious threat to lives.
The makeshift bridge, which spans the Owabi River, has become increasingly dangerous, particularly for the sick and pregnant women who depend on it to access a nearby health facility. During rainfall, the bridge becomes completely impassable.
Out of fear for their safety, residents often dismantle the wooden planks when rain is imminent to avoid the risk of being swept away by floodwaters.
This reporter, who visited the area, described the 20-metre bridge as lacking both handrails and structural integrity, making it hazardous for all who use it.
Impassable During Rains
“When it rains, there’s no way one can cross to the other end. We have to wait until the water recedes, which can take hours or even a day,” one resident lamented.
“Flooding is another major concern, as the area becomes waterlogged during the rains on several occasions, making residents living on the banks relocate,” Ama Atta, a resident, added.
Appeal for Assembly Support
The community is urging the Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly to construct a durable and safe bridge that can withstand flooding and serve the needs of all residents.
They believe such an intervention would ensure the safety of vulnerable groups, particularly pregnant women and schoolchildren.
