AGOA remains key to Ghana-U.S economic Cooperation — Tourism Minister

Ghana’s textile, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors have benefited significantly from trade opportunities under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which has helped local businesses reach global markets.

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, made this statement at an event marking the 249th anniversary of U.S. independence on Friday in Accra.

She highlighted how the AGOA trade agreement has strengthened economic ties between the two nations.

She praised the U.S. for its longstanding commitment to liberty, democracy, and innovation, noting that these values align with Ghana’s principles.

Madam Gomashie emphasised the strong partnership between Ghana and the U.S., rooted in shared democratic ideals and economic collaboration.

Reflecting on the words of President Donald Trump and the late Kofi Annan, she stressed the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges.

The minister expressed optimism about the future of Ghana-U.S. relations, particularly through increased people-to-people exchanges and inclusive development initiatives.

On his part, the U.S. Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires, Rolf Olson, echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the historical parallels between the two nations as former colonies that have grown into stable democracies.

He noted the symbolic link between U.S. Independence Day and Ghana’s Republic Day, both celebrated in July.

Mr Olson highlighted recent democratic transitions in both countries as evidence of resilient governance.

He reaffirmed the U.S. government’s commitment to partnering with Ghana in health, agriculture, education, security, and trade, with AGOA remaining a cornerstone of economic cooperation.
