Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has made it unequivocally clear that he does not support any attempt to suppress investigative journalism, even if it involves scrutiny of the judiciary.

Appearing before Parliament's Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, Justice Dzamefe was asked whether he would endorse suppressive measures to shield the judiciary’s image. His response was a firm rejection of such tactics, especially when journalists are acting in the public interest and reporting truthfully.

“Generally, I wouldn’t recommend repression,” he said. “Any investigative journalist who wants to do a thorough job—once it’s true, why would I recommend suppression? Once it’s fair, fine.”

Justice Dzamefe’s remarks arrive at a time of heightened national discourse around press freedom and the role of journalism in holding public institutions accountable. His position reflects a strong commitment to the principles of transparency, truth, and constitutional freedoms—even within the sensitive realm of the judiciary.

His vetting comes amid ongoing debate about the extent to which media scrutiny can coexist with judicial integrity. For many, his stance affirms the judiciary’s openness to legitimate public oversight while rejecting any culture of impunity or concealment.

Justice Dzamefe’s comments are likely to resonate with advocates of press freedom and democratic accountability, reinforcing the idea that a free and fair press is vital to the health of Ghana’s democracy—even when it shines a spotlight on the judiciary itself.
