Business & Finance Interior Minister urges new Gaming Commission Board to strengthen regulations

The Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has inaugurated an 11-member Governing Board of the Gaming Commission of Ghana, tasking them with driving regulatory reform and promoting responsible gaming practices.

The Board’s mandate includes ensuring compliance with international best practices, addressing underage gambling and illegal operations as well as promoting staff capacity development.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday in Accra, Mr. Muntaka emphasised the importance of passing the draft Legislative Instrument (LI) to enhance governance standards and build a robust, sustainable gaming industry.

He noted that the current legal framework under the Gaming Act does not sufficiently address the evolving trends in the industry, particularly with the advent of artificial intelligence.

The Minister commended the Commission for its recent progress, highlighting the drafting of the Legislative Instrument (LI) for regulatory reform, the development of a Health and Safety Policy, and the launch of the “Purple Month” initiative to sensitise young people to gaming addiction.

He expressed confidence in the Board’s ability to carry out its duties with diligence and integrity, assuring them of his full support in building a modern gaming industry in Ghana.

The Minister underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring that the gaming industry contributes positively to national economic development while safeguarding the welfare of citizens.

The Chairman of the Governing Board, Mr. James Enu Esq. expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the President for the confidence reposed in them and gave the assurance that the Board would work to the best of its ability and engage key stakeholders to improve the gaming industry.
