President Mahama appoints Prof. Seidu Alidu as Executive Secretary of Water Resources Commission

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Professor Seidu Alidu as the new Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission, signaling a shift toward more research-driven leadership in Ghana’s water governance sector.

Professor Alidu, who currently serves as an Associate Professor and Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, is widely recognized for his expertise in political systems, governance, and public policy. His academic and professional journey spans multiple countries, institutions, and research initiatives, making him one of the most versatile scholars in his field.

His appointment brings significant academic and practical experience to the Commission. In 2014, he was selected as a Donahue Institute Scholar in U.S. Political Thought at the University of Massachusetts. He has also held a fellowship at the Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA), where he conducted research on the role of parliaments in shaping democratic institutions across Africa.

Over the years, Professor Alidu has worked with numerous local and international policy organizations. His collaborators include the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR) in Kenya, the Centre for International Development Issues Nijmegen in the Netherlands, the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, and Ghana’s own Institute for Democratic Governance. He has also partnered with entities such as the UNDP, the Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung, the Varieties of Democracy Project in Sweden, the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, the German-African Governance Partnership, and the Social Science Research Council in New York.

His scholarly work has appeared in several respected journals, including Peace Review, Criminal Justice Studies, Transitional Justice Review, Journal of African Political Economy and Development, Contemporary Journal of African Development, and Ghana Studies.

With this diverse portfolio, Professor Alidu is expected to bring strategic insight, academic rigor, and cross-sector collaboration to the Water Resources Commission. His leadership is anticipated to enhance the formulation and execution of policies that ensure sustainable and equitable management of Ghana’s water resources.
