Traditional authorities, youth root for Alhaji Bash as Korle Klottey Municipal Chief Executive

Traditional authorities and youth leaders in the Korle Klottey Municipality are calling on the government to appoint an indigene and royal as the next Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), after years of what they describe as the imposition of non-indigenes as Members of Parliament.

Speaking at a press conference held at the forecourt of the Osu Mantse Palace, Stephen Nii Noi Dowuona, a representative of the Concerned Youth of Korle Klottey, appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to appoint Muhammed Bashiru Nii Narh Alema Dowuona, popularly known as Alhaji Bash, as the next MCE for the area.

According to Nii Noi Dowuona, the appointment of Alhaji Bash would not only be a long-overdue recognition of an indigene’s contribution but would also motivate the youth to continue contributing positively to the development of the constituency and remain loyal to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He emphasized that traditional authorities, including the Dzase and elders from Osu, as well as youth groups from Adabraka, Tudu, Asylum Down, and Odowna, are unanimously backing Alhaji Bash for the position.

He recounted that in 2020, Alhaji Bash was appointed the campaign manager for the Korle Klottey Constituency due to his unique ability to unite feuding factions within the party. At the campaign launch, he personally donated $1,000 to kick-start the activities. Beyond that, he reportedly spent hundreds of thousands of Ghana cedis to fund the campaign, including efforts to reconcile internal disputes before the campaign hit the ground.

“Despite the difficult demands of the factions, Alhaji Bash was able to bring everyone together. His leadership earned him the popular slogan ‘Bash Oooo Bash’—to which the response is ‘Unity Ooo Unity,’” he stated, noting that the NDC eventually won the seat with a margin of over 8,000 votes.

The youth leader further disclosed that Alhaji Bash formed campaign teams across all electoral areas, supplied them with NDC-branded T-shirts, and supported them with weekly stipends—funded entirely from his own resources.

He recalled that during the 2020 elections, when funding for polling agents was delayed, an emergency meeting was held involving key figures such as Hon. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Alfred Ato Gaisie, and constituency secretary Eugene Eshun. It was unanimously agreed that Alhaji Bash should pre-finance the exercise, which he did. A cheque was later issued to reimburse him after the elections.

Nii Noi Dowuona also praised Alhaji Bash for supporting EC registration exercises by giving out tens of thousands of cedis to help NDC activists, ward coordinators, and assembly members mobilize eligible voters. He also donated funds and logistics to support the women’s caucus during the registration period.

He described Alhaji Bash as the third most generous financier of the NDC in Korle Klottey, after Hon. Valerie Esther Sawyer, noting that his selfless contributions to both individuals and the party have been consistent.

“If all these acts of service, benevolence, and dedication to the party are not recognized, then what is the point of being loyal? Alhaji Bash has always chosen not to publicize the many ways he has helped the needy in the constituency, as his religion discourages boasting about good deeds,” he said.

Academic Background
Alhaji Bash holds a Master’s degree in Logistics Management from Coventry University in the UK, a Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship from the University of Cape Coast, and a Bachelor's degree from Wisconsin International University College.

“We are therefore appealing to the appointing authorities to reward loyalty. We’ve seen names circulating online as the preferred choice of the MP in the MMDCE nominations—but should Alhaji Bash’s tireless efforts go unrewarded? Are we abandoning loyalty?” Nii Noi Dowuona questioned.
