The National Media Commission (NMC) has urged the Board of Directors of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to ensure that all staff are informed about the renewal of the contract of the Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan.
In a letter addressed to the Board Chairman, the Executive Secretary of the NMC, Mr George Sarpong, noted that the Commission had renewed Prof. Alhassan's appointment on February 26, 2024.
The decision was publicly announced during the introduction of the new GBC Board on August 13, 2024. However, recent media reports indicate that some employees remain unaware of the development.
The Commission urged the Board to take necessary steps to communicate the information to all staff. It also assured the Board of its readiness to provide any additional clarification, should the need arise.
The NMC expressed confidence in the leadership of the Board, management, and staff, acknowledging their efforts in driving GBC's progress in recent years.
It encouraged all stakeholders to work together to sustain the achievements recorded under Prof. Alhassan's tenure.
Professor Amin Alhassan was first appointed as the Director-General of GBC in August 2019. Prior to this role, he served as the Principal of the Wa Campus of the University for Development Studies. Prof. Alhassan is a development communication expert with a rich professional background, including previous work with GBC Radio News and the Ghana News Agency after graduating from the Ghana Institute of Journalism. He holds Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Communication Studies from Tampere University in Finland and Concordia University in Montreal.
