In an effort to promote good oral hygiene, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine participated in the global celebration of World Oral Health Day on Thursday, March 20, by visiting Dokyiwa M/A School to educate the students about the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene.
AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine recently launched an integrated health education program in public schools within its operational areas. This program is a key part of their academic guidance and personal development initiative, aimed at bringing health education directly to school children to foster a healthy, physical, psychosocial, and conducive learning environment.
With the support of the Ghana Education Service and the AGA Health Foundation, the event focused on raising awareness among school children about the vital role oral health plays in overall well-being. Students and teachers participated in engaging educational sessions covering oral hygiene, proper brushing techniques, cavity prevention, and the best foods and drinks for maintaining strong and healthy teeth.
Dr. Edwin Addo-Tham, the resident dentist at AGA Health Foundation, encouraged the children to prioritize their oral health. He introduced key oral care practices, including brushing twice daily for two minutes, using fluoride toothpaste, limiting sugary and acidic foods, replacing toothbrushes every 3-4 months, and visiting the dentist regularly for check-ups.
Mavis Nana Yaa Kyie, Social Development and Gender Superintendent of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, noted that the program was extended to the Dokyiwa School to inform the students about issues affecting their personal well-being. She emphasized that AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine is committed to instilling in school children the importance of making their health a priority.
"By starting at this age, we believe the children will grow up understanding the value of their health and become responsible stewards of their well-being," she stated.
Naomi Ampofo, the headmistress of Dokyiwa M/A JHS, praised AngloGold Ashanti for bringing the program to their school, noting that it has broadened the students' understanding of oral hygiene. She highlighted the importance of collaborating with the global community to celebrate World Oral Health Day and educate children about oral health.
