The Government of Ghana has officially declared Monday, March 31, 2025, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Eid-ul-Fitr, which falls on Sunday, March 30, 2025, is a statutory public holiday in Ghana. However, since the occasion coincides with a weekend, President John Dramani Mahama has exercised his executive powers under the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601) to declare additional holidays on March 31 and April 1 for public observance.
The announcement was made by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, in an official statement, urging all citizens to take note of the holidays and observe them accordingly.
The decision ensures that the Muslim community, along with the general public, has ample time to celebrate the festival, which marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.
With two consecutive public holidays, businesses, government institutions, and schools across the country will remain closed. Many Ghanaians are expected to take advantage of the break for celebrations, travel, and family gatherings.
Authorities have also urged the public to observe the occasion in peace and unity while adhering to safety regulations.
Eid-ul-Fitr is one of the most significant Islamic festivals, symbolizing gratitude, charity, and the renewal of faith. As Muslims across the country prepare for the festivities, the extended holidays provide an opportunity for wider participation in prayers, feasting, and community engagements.
