Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that the National Research Fund will become fully operational this year and will receive adequate funding to support academic research across the country.
Speaking at the National Education Forum in the Volta Region, the Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing research and innovation through proper financial support. “The National Research Fund would be operationalized this year fully and adequately funded,” he assured.
Addressing concerns about political interference in university governance, Haruna Iddrisu reassured lecturers and university management that the government will uphold the autonomy of academic institutions. “It is not the intention of President Mahama or the NDC to interfere with your university governance. So, have absolute faith that there would be unfettered academic freedom and its respect,” he stated.
He further emphasized that while the government would comply with legal requirements and work with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), it would not meddle in university governance. “We will not interfere with your governance. What the law requires us to do we will consult with GTEC, except that we will help you build strong institutions,” he added.
The Education Minister also revealed that President Mahama will appoint the governing councils of universities within the next 14 days. “Within the next two weeks, President Mahama would appoint the governing councils of the university,” he announced, signaling the government’s commitment to strengthening educational leadership and fostering academic growth.
The announcement marks a significant step toward enhancing research capabilities and ensuring the independence of Ghana’s academic institutions under the current administration.
