President John Mahama has appointed Kwesi Afreh Biney as the new Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), with Adam Sulley assuming the role of Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations and Benefits.
These appointments come in the wake of the dismissal of Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo as Director-General of SSNIT. Sources indicate that the contracts of his three deputies, Kwame Adu-Darkwa, Juliana Kpedekpo, and Nana Serwah Bonsu Amoako, have also been terminated. Adu-Darkwa served as Deputy Director-General for Finance and Administration, Kpedekpo as Deputy Director-General for Operations and Benefits, and Amoako as Deputy Director-General for Investment and Development.
This latest shake-up follows a series of leadership changes at SSNIT. In April 2024, then-President Nana Akufo-Addo removed Dr. John Ofori Tenkorang and appointed Osafo-Maafo in his place. Osafo-Maafo, son of former Presidential Advisor Yaw Osafo-Maafo, assumed office amid a wave of resignations, including that of Deputy Director-General for Finance and Administration, Michael Addo. His appointment also led to the reassignment of Pearl Nana Ama Darko from SSNIT to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) as Commissioner for Support Services.
Juliana Kpedekpo, who replaced Darko at SSNIT, is now among those whose contracts have been revoked.
