As part of its corporate social responsibility, Underground Mining Alliance (UMA), a sub-contractor of Newmont Ahafo Mine, has handed over a Kindergarten block valued at GH¢1,016,264 to St. Lawrence R/C Basic School at Ntotroso in the Ahafo Region.
The new school block features two classrooms, two offices, washrooms, and a mechanized borehole. It replaces an old, dilapidated structure, thereby providing a fitting and conducive learning environment for the pupils.
During the handing-over ceremony at Ntotroso, Keith Riggs, Project Manager of the Subika Underground Project at Newmont Ahafo Mine, stated that UMA is committed to collaborating with stakeholders to build a sustainable future for operational communities.
Human capital
"Our primary focus is on investing in human capital development because we firmly believe that such investments create widespread benefits, including equitable opportunities, economic empowerment, poverty reduction, and social inclusion," he stated.
Mr. Riggs urged parents to encourage their children to utilize the facility effectively by learning and attending school regularly. He also commended ROPEAK Engineering Limited for supplying tables and chairs and for contributing a discount of GH¢162,158.48 to the project cost.
The Asutifi North District Director of Education, Naomi Asantewaa, extended the Directorate's profound appreciation to UMA for the school block, noting that it will significantly enhance teaching and learning at the school. She appealed to other benevolent organizations to partner with the Directorate in providing holistic education for the children in the area.
Similarly, the Twafohene of the Ntotroso Traditional Council, Nana Kusi Boadum, urged the school authorities to adopt a culture of maintenance to preserve the building for the long-term benefit of the community.
