Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin has challenged lawyer Martin Kpebu over claims regarding investigations into his private affairs, stating that Kpebu cannot feign ignorance.
Speaking on Good Evening Ghana with Paul Adom-Otchere monitored by MyNewsGH, Afenyo-Markin accused some individuals of conducting intrusive searches into his personal property, including reviewing his bank accounts and land documents.
“I have a lot of respect for Martin, and I don’t want any issue with him. But if he claims he doesn’t know, fine. However, if he does and still chooses to deny it in public, I leave that to his conscience,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin alleged that certain individuals had gone as far as filming his property in Weija and writing to the Lands Commission to verify its status. He explained the legal complexities surrounding land ownership in Weija, noting that all lands in the area are vested and require government approval for registration.
“They ignorantly forgot that after the Supreme Court ruling on Weija lands in the 1950s, there was still litigation.
Eventually, President Nkrumah placed a ban on private ownership through an executive instrument. So, even if a chief sells land to you, you still need state approval to register it.”
The Minority Leader dismissed what he described as attempts to discredit him, insisting that those probing into his affairs lacked understanding of land laws.
“They are an ignorant bunch. If they had sought legal advice, they wouldn’t have embarrassed themselves. But it’s okay, they don’t know anything.”
He also criticized the conduct of a ministerial nominee who allegedly brought up his private affairs during a vetting session.
“This is the first time I’ve seen a nominee questioning a ranking member’s integrity. The man couldn’t even own up to a property that records show is in the name of his sister, yet he claims to be a tenant.”
Afenyo-Markin concluded by stating that he was aware of all attempts to target him and remained unfazed.
“When I took this job, I knew these things would happen. As a Minority Leader, you won’t be allowed to have peace, so you must be ready and determined.”
