Dr Maxwell Opoku-Afari, First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), has proceeded on leave ahead of the end of his second-term contract in August 2025, the central bank has announced.

In a statement dated February 4, the bank indicated that the decision had received approval from President John Dramani Mahama.

“The public is hereby informed that Dr Maxwell Opoku-Afari, the current First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, has decided to proceed on leave from February 5, 2025, prior to the end of his contract. This has received the approval of H.E. President John Mahama,” the statement read in part.

Dr Opoku-Afari was first appointed on August 7, 2017, for a four-year term and was reappointed for a second term on August 7, 2021.

According to the Bank of Ghana Act, 2002 (Act 612), as amended, his tenure as First Deputy Governor officially ends on August 6, 2025, after completing the two full terms allowed under the Act.

Meanwhile, on January 31, President John Dramani Mahama nominated Dr Johnson Asiamah as Governor of the Bank of Ghana, pending approval by the Council of State.

This nomination follows the impending retirement of the current Governor, Dr Ernest Addison, who is on terminal leave ahead of his retirement in March 2025. Dr Addison has served as Governor since 2017.
