The Director of Driver Training, Testing & Licensing at DVLA, Mr Kafui Semevo has revealed that there is shortage of professional driving instructors in the country.
Mr Kafui Semevo made this known at the inauguration of the 2025-2028 executives of the Association of Certified Driving Instructors of Ghana (ACDI-GH) at a ceremony held at the conference room of Ghana TVET Service in Accra.
The inauguration which was held on Thursday, 30th January 2025, follows a successful election of new executives of the association in December 2024, to lead ACDI-GH for the next four years.
According to Mr Semevo, Ghana is currently experiencing shortages of professional driving instructors, adding that, the DVLA is introducing an initiative to partner technical universities to train more instructors.
"Even though we have a collaboration with the Ghana TVET Service, we are also looking forward to partnering the Technical Universities to help train more instructors," he stated.
He also announced that DVLA in the coming days will start testing applicants in six local languages.
Chief Superintendent Alexander K Obeng, Director of Education, Research & Training, MTTD of the Ghana Police Service speaking at the inauguration called for a close working relationship between stakeholders and the instructors association to improve the standard of training for both instructors and learners with more emphasis on practical training.
In his Inaugural address, President of the Association, Instructor Marshall Bobobee appealed to government, corporate bodies and the media to collaborate with the instructors association to improve the road transport sector of the country.
"To the government, we seek your continued partnership and support to ensure that road safety remains a top priority in our national agenda. We also ask for the necessary reforms and investments in our industry to create more job opportunities, improve our training programs, and ensure that our members are equipped to provide the best possible services to the public.
"To Corporate Ghana, we call on you to partners us to enhance road safety and driving education, invest in your driving staff through defensive driving training, and support initiatives to promote industry-specific driving training programs. We are also available to offer you the opportunity to benefit from our expertise in driver education for training your driving staff.
"To the Media, we urge you to highlight the importance of road safety and defensive driving on your platforms, offer us the platform to showcase the expertise and contributions of driving instructors, help us to address misconceptions and myths surrounding driver education, promote awareness of new industry developments and changes, and also collaborate with us on public road safety education campaigns and initiatives," he stated.
The Association of Certified Driving Instructors of Ghana (ACDI-GH) is the professional body for driver trainers in Ghana, and consist of members working in driving schools and other institutions across the country.
The association exists to coach, regulate, improve the welfare and professionalism of its members to meet internationally accepted standards, offering quality service to clients and the nation at all times, and working hand in hand with Driver Training, Testing and Licensing Department of the DVLA, and other stakeholders to promote good driving standards in Ghana.
The new executive body is under the presidency of the DVLA 2022/2023 National Best Instructor, Marshall Bobobee. Other executives sworn in include; Inst. Isaac Obour (1st Vice President), Inst. Francis M. Bantey (Financial Secretary), L.L. Victor Bruce-Crabbe (Research, Training & Development Officer), Inst. Reuben A. Gaglo (1st Communications Officer), and Inst. Solomon Friday Narh Lamptey (Organizing Secretary).
Stakeholders present at the ceremony include but not limited to; Director ERT/MTTD (Chief Superintendent Alexander K Obeng), Director DTTL/DVLA (Mr Kafui Semevo), Project Manager Transaid-UK (Madam Thelma Ayisi), Principal Manager NRSA (Mr Dennis Yeribu), President of Ghana National Association of Driving Schools (Rev.
