Social News Vetting: I intend to demonopolize waste management – Murtala Mohammed
THU, 30 JAN 2025 2

The Minister-designate for Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed has pledged to reform the waste management sector by breaking the monopoly currently held by a few players.

During his vetting at Parliament, Murtala shared his vision for a more inclusive and locally driven approach to waste management, which he believes will create more job opportunities for Ghanaians.

“I intend to demonopolize the management of waste in this country and engage local authorities and SMEs,” Muhammed said, emphasizing that this approach will empower local communities and enhance job creation.

He noted that the involvement of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and local authorities in waste management would lead to more efficient and effective solutions, benefiting both the economy and the environment.

Reflecting on his observations during the 8th Parliament, the minister-designate pointed out that local authorities have the capacity to take on more responsibility in the waste management process.

However, he clarified that this does not aim to undermine or target those already involved in the industry. Instead, his plan seeks to integrate SMEs at the grassroots level, which would allow for better coverage and higher efficiency in waste management.

“In the last Parliament, we realized that local authorities can also have the capacity to do some of these things. That is not to discourage or target those already involved. Involving SMEs at the local level will enhance effectiveness and efficiency to achieve expected volumes,” he stated.
