The Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission (NMC), George Sarpong, has criticized the management of Onua FM and Onua TV for failing to address repeated instances of professional misconduct by their presenters.

Mr Sarpong emphasized that the responsibility for such infractions ultimately lies with the station’s operators while speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday, January 22,

“The management of Onua FM and Onua TV has consistently failed to address serious instances of misconduct by their presenters,” he said, adding, “The bigger problem is with those who control him [Captain Smart].

Responsibility must be placed on the companies that operate these stations. They have the power to recruit, train, and regulate their content.”

In a decisive move, the NMC has filed a notice of revocation against the broadcasting licenses of Onua FM and Onua TV with the National Communications Authority (NCA).

Explaining the rationale, Sarpong described the station’s operations as “extremely dangerous because of their content.”

He argued that unchecked conduct by presenters has far-reaching consequences, underscoring the need for stricter oversight within Ghana’s media landscape.

This intervention follows the recent controversy surrounding Captain Smart, a presenter at Onua TV, who has faced scrutiny for allegedly inciting illegal miners to invade the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) mine in Obuasi.

The incident led to a deadly confrontation, resulting in the deaths of nine illegal miners. Critics have attributed the tragedy, in part, to sensational and irresponsible media commentary, further fueling the ongoing debate about the media’s role in public safety.

Notable among these are Multimedia, Media General, and Omni Media. However, how can one blame them when there are no standards in the country? Do you recall how they were attempting to undermine the Electoral Commission, ...
