The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has urged the public to disregard a video alleging that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has smuggled dollars into its branded bags.
According to the EC, the video in question was taken during the destruction of ballot papers for the Ahafo and Volta regions, a process it announced ahead of the 2024 General Election.
In a statement dated January 22 and signed by Deputy Chairman of Operations Samuel Tettey, the EC explained that the video’s audio has been manipulated to mislead the public.
“The individual is heard falsely stating that the EC-branded bags, which contained ballot papers meant for destruction, rather contained dollars being smuggled by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“We entreat the public to disregard the claims as they are false. To refresh the public’s memory, the EC destroyed ballot papers printed for Ahafo and Volta regions due to serialization issues encountered with the said ballot papers,” part of the statement read.
The commission clarified that the ballots were destroyed by Zoomlion Ghana Limited under its supervision, which accounts for the presence of EC and Zoomlion staff seen in the video.
